Gurman: iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Expected Specs; Apple Watch 9

Apple is expected to stick with the Fall (September) as the release date for the next range of iPhones. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes the company will unveil the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro series as well as the next generation Apple Watches – the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2. Various sources have suggested the devices will be unveiled on September 12, with sales expected a week later.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro

Apple is expected to make the pro-exclusive Dynamic Island available to the non-pro models while the pro models’ display will be manufactured using LIPO (Low-Injection Pressure Over-Molding) technology to achieve thinner bezels. This display technology is part of the company’s continuous effort to reduce the bezels (and apparently reconfigure the notch) on the iPhone.

Dynamic Island replaced the Notch which was introduced with the iPhone X in 2017. The first Apple products with the feature were the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The report suggests LIPO will be implemented on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, bringing the bezels down to 1.5mm thin. It will also be extended to some upcoming iPad models.

The new iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are expected to be powered by the newer A17 Bionic (3nm) processor. They are also expected to feature a USB-C port instead of a lightning port, Wi-Fi 6E, titanium steel frame + frosted glass back, rear camera upgrades, and a customizable Action button to replace the mute/ring toggle. Features such as Always-On display and ProMotion are still expected to be pro-exclusive.

Alongside the introduction of Dynamic Island, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will retain the same look as its predecessor. Other changes expected are the following: the A16 Bionic (5nm) processor – the one used in the iPhone 14 Pro models – and a USB-C port. The non-pro models are expected to get a camera overhaul and there would be an increase in the pricing across all four models outside the US.

Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2

Apple is expected to release two variants of the next-generation Series 9 watch – a 41mm and 45mm case sizes. The two Watch Series 9 models along with the next-generation Watch Ultra will be powered by the S9 chip, which will be based on the A15 Bionic (N5P) chip. The non-ultra models will most likely retain the same features as the previous generation while the new Ultra watch will add a new premium color option.
