WWDC23: watchOS 10 and tvOS 17 Will Arrive Later in 2023

Apple has announced the new software updates coming to the Apple Watch (watchOS 10) and Apple TV 4K (tvOS 17) in the Fall of 2023. They are now available as a developer beta and will arrive as a free software update for Apple Watch (Series 4 or later paired with iPhone Xs or later, running iOS 17) and Apple TV (HD and 4K).

watchOS 10

The next iteration of the watchOS will deliver a mental health support feature, redesigned interface, new smart stack, new metrics, and new watch faces. The redesigned interface has a new simplified navigation and information will be available at a glance. The new Smart Stack feature, controlled with the Digital Crown, includes widgets that display tailored information on a beautiful watch face.

A single click on the side button brings up the Control Centre while a double-click of the Digital Crown goes back to recent apps. There are two new watch faces – Palette and Snoopy; users can now log their emotions and daily moods in the Mindfulness app. iPad and iPhone users will get detailed insight on factors contributing to their state of mind.

Users will also be able to log in the amount of time spent in daylight and the new Screen Distance feature urges consumers to move away from their device after prolonged screen time. Cyclists will now get advanced workout metrics and the Apple Watch can automatically connect to Bluetooth-enabled cycling accessories.

Hikers will now be able to generate two waypoints – Last Cellular Connection Waypoint and Last Emergency Call Waypoint. There is also a new Elevation view that showcases saved waypoints in 3D and new topographic map for US users. Other features coming to the Apple Watch include NameDrop, Offline Maps, Medications app and initiating playback on FaceTime video.

tvOS 17

FaceTime takes the front page as it is now available on the big screen. Apple TV 4K users will be able to use the FaceTime app on Apple TV to make calls directly from Apple TV or hand off calls from the iPhone/iPad to the Apple TV. It utilises the Continuity Camera feature on the iPhone and iPad; and leverages the microphone and camera on these devices.

There is a new Split View which allows the user to enjoy and share content via SharePlay while still on a FaceTIme call. Apple is expected to bring other video conferencing apps such as Webex and Zoom to Apple TV later this year. Apple Music Sing – another feature that will use the Continuity Camera – lets users watch themselves on the screen, add effects and sing along Karaoke-style.

tvOS 17 will also deliver a redesigned Control Center, ability to locate the Siri Remote on iPhone, Screen saver enhancements, Dolby Vision 8.1 support and Third-party VPN support.
