WWDC22: Apple Unveil M2 Chip For Mac Computers

Apple has unveiled the first member of the second-generation M-Series chips for Mac at the WWDC. The Apple M2 is built using an enhanced second-generation 5nm technology and when compared to the M1, it delivers a faster CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, unified memory, and higher memory bandwidth. It powers the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro and redesigned MacBook Air.

The Apple M2 consists of 20 billion transistors – 25 per cent more than M1; offers 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth – 50 per cent more than M1; and configured with up to 24GB of fast unified memory to handle further complex workloads. The new CPU has faster performance cores and enhanced efficiency cores to deliver up to 18 percent faster multithreaded performance.

Apple says the performance of the new chip is nearly twice as fast as the latest 10-core PC laptop chip. The new 10-core GPU with larger cache and higher memory bandwidth, delivers up to 25 percent boost in performance more than the M1 at normal power level and up to 35 percent at peak level. It is also said to deliver 2.3x faster graphics performance at the same power level as the latest PC laptop chip. Additionally, the chip’s Neural Engine can process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second and has ProRes video capability at 4K and 8K resolution.
