Report: Apple Working on Rugged Apple Watch For Outdoors

Apple is reportedly working on a rugged Apple Watch model which would target lovers of outdoor activities and adventures. The rugged Watch version is reportedly known internally as ‘Explorers Edition’ and is expected to arrive with features such as a well-protected screen and casing, durable straps, water resistance, and protection against different weather conditions and elements.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman report that the rugged Apple Watch will be offered as an additional model such as the cheaper Apple Watch SE and the steeply priced Nike or Hermes branded versions of the Apple Watch. It will retain most of the features available on current models, as well as adds-on such as protection from impact resistance, and exterior rubber casing instead of the damage-prone aluminium, stainless, or titanium metal options currently available.

Apple is also working on an additional ‘Swim Tracking’ Watch feature which would keep record of the user’s swim workouts. The Cupertino company currently occupies up to 40% of the global wearables market (Q4 2020) and its wearables, home, and accessories segment, which the Watch series is a part of, made the company US$ 30 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year.

While there is no valid confirmation on its existence, the company could launch the rugged Watch model later this year (likely September) or very early in 2022. It could also decide to postpone or cancel the product altogether.
