Apple Not Looking to Include Free Apple Music Tier

Despite the recent rumblings about a potential free Apple Music Tier, Apple’s global Senior Director of Music publishing, Elena Segal, has confirmed this is not happening. During an event organized by British members of parliament in the UK’s Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) committee, the executive confirmed that the Cupertino giant was not looking to launch a free Apple Music tier.

During a Q&A session during the aforementioned event, Segal responded to the question of Apple Music having a free tier saying;

“We don’t think that an ad-supported service can generate enough revenue to support a healthy overall ecosystem. And it would also really go against our fundamental values on privacy.”

When questioned further about why the pricing of streaming has been stuck at GBP 9.99 since inception, she said,

“… We have been competing with free… since the beginning of iTunes in 2003, or 2004 in the UK. And competing with free is always very difficult, because consumers have a choice to move to free.”

Segal was in attendance alongside representatives from Amazon Music and Spotify, where they were quizzed about the economics of streaming services including pricing (subscription plans), position on free tier plans amongst other questions.

Unlike Spotify and Amazon Music which have a free (ad-supported) tier alongside their various subscription plans, Apple Music has three simple paid plans: Student, individual and Family. Apple is also yet to jump on the Hi-Fi (lossless High Fidelity sound) train which Spotify has coming later in 2021 but available already on services like Tidal and Deezer.
