Netflix Adds ‘Basic with Ads’ Subscription Plan For AU$ 6.99

Netflix has rolled out its ad-based subscription plan to countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S. The new Basic With Ads plan is available for a monthly fee of AU$ 6.99 (AU$ 4 cheaper than the Basic Plan, AU$ 10 cheaper than the Standard and AU$ 16 cheaper than the Premium plan in Australia).

Netflix’s Basic With Ads is simply the Basic plan with some limitations. Subscribers have give up downloading titles for offline viewing and sit through 15 – 30s ads before and during movies or TV shows (an average of 4 – 5 minutes of ads per hour). New Netflix movies will only get ads before viewing to preserve the cinematic experience.

Video streaming quality is at up to 720p/HD for both Netflix Basic with Ads and Basic plans (1080p on Standard and 4K on premium); and streaming is available on one device. Several movies and TV shows are also unavailable due to licensing restrictions. Signing up is the same as before (more information might be required for ad trageting) and exisiting subscribers can also make the switch.

Netflix has teamed up with Microsoft to display ads and Australians can expect to see ads from CommBank, Coles and Woolworths. The streaming giant is hoping the new plan will help further strengthen its subscriber base and keep up with competition. Platforms such as HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+ and Peacock already offer ad-based plans, meanwhile Disney+ is also expected to launch its ad-based plan (Disney+ Basic) in December.
