Kuo: Apple’s A16 Chip Will Only Power iPhone 14 Pro Models

Popular Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that only the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models will be powered by the next generation A series chip, the A16. The standard iPhone 14 models willl retain the exisiting A15 Bionic chip which powers the entire iPhone 13 (and 13 Pro) lineup and the new 3rd-Gen iPhone SE with 5G.

By factoring in the ongoing component supply issues around the world, Apple would be taking a different approach by saving the latest A series chip for the iPhone pro models and maintaning their higher pricing, while bringing the same chip a year later to the standard models to keep pricing within the same ‘affordable’ range.

Kuo also believes the company will ditch the ‘mini’ models with smaller screen (5.4-inch) for a ‘Max’ model with the same screen size as the Pro Max. As such, the next generation of iPhones (or 2022 iPhones) will be the iPhone 14, 14 Max, 14 Pro and 14 Max Pro. They will have respective 6.1-inch (iPhone 14 and 14 Pro) and 6.7-inch (iPhone 14 Max and 14 Pro Max) displays; and 6GB of RAM.

However, the non-pro models will have LPDDR4X while the pro models will have LPDDR5. The latter is about one and half times faster and up to 30-percent more power efficient than the former. There is no official confirmation regarding this report but with the current component shortage happening around the world, it is a plausible option for the company to explore.
