Gurman: iPhone 15 Ultra Could Replace iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 series is only about a month old; however, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from obsessing over its yet-to-be official successor – the iPhone 15. Supply chain expert, Ross Young reckons that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max exclusive ‘Dynamic Island’ feature will be making its way to all models of the iPhone 15, but ProMotion tech will still be reserved for the Pro models.

As per the three-year redesign cycle, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes Apple will not be only be redesigning, it could also be introducing a new naming scheme starting with the iPhone 15. Just as the iPhone 14 Plus replaced the mini models, in the same manner the Pro Max model of the iPhone 15 could be sacrificed in favor of the iPhone 15 Ultra.

This separates the standard Pro from the Pro Max (or soon to become Ultra) models. Apple is expected to further increase the differentiation between iPhone models from screen size, memory, and camera to include processors and other features such as Always-on display. Basically, we could be looking at the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra in 2023. So far, there is the new Watch Ultra and the M1 Ultra is the most powerful chip in the M1 series.

Seeing as this year’s iPhones played out, Apple is expected to reserve the A17 Bionic chip (3nm) for the 15 Pro or Pro Max/Ultra models and use the A16 Bionic chip (4nm) from the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max for the 15/15 Plus models. Finally, in anticipation of EU’s one-cable law, there are chances that next year’s iPhone models could ship with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. The USB-C on the Pro models could reach Thunderbolt 4 speed level (up to 40 Gbps).
