Currently available to only US users, the iPhone’s Clean Energy Feature combines with ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ to establish the user’s charging pattern. Enabled by default on iOS 16.1, the iPhone gets a report/forecast of the carbon emissions generated by the local energy source. When plugged into a power source, the phone charges only when a cleaner energy source is available.

To enable or disable, locate the Settings app > Choose Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Toggle On or Off Clean Energy Charging feature.

The feature only engages in a location where the user has a recognizable pattern of usage, such as at home or work. It also engages when the phone is plugged-in for a long period of time and doesn’t when in a new location or when the user is hopping locations (travelling). There are other ‘Location’ settings that are required for the feature to work effectively.

When Clean Energy suspends charging, a notification pops up on the lock screen. To continue charging the device, long-press the notification and tap ‘Charge Now’. It is too early to tell what the impact of the iPhone’s Clean Energy Charging. However, if it becomes successful soon, there are chances it will be extended globally and to other Apple devices thereafter.
