HomePod 16.1, tvOS 16.1 and watchOS 9.1 Now Available

Earlier today, Apple released the latest major software update for its various hardware products. Compatible iPhone and iPad models received iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16; while compatible mac models received macOS 13 ventura. The company also released watchOS 9.1 for the Apple Watch, tvOS 16.1 for the Apple TV and HomePod 16.1 for HomePod devices.

In common, they all include support for Matter – a unifying standard for smart home connectivity. This new standard enables different smart home accessories from different ecosystems to work together. There are also respective important bugs, performance improvements and security fixes.

HomePod 16.1

The most important update about the HomePod is the introduction of Matter support for the HomePod and HomePod mini. The update happens mostly in the background (automatically); however, you can locate the Home app, Home Settings > Software Updates to access manually.

tvOS 16.1

Following last week’s release of the Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple has released tvOS 16.1 to deliver new updates to the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD. The update introduces support for Fitness+ directly on iPhone, shared photo library and redesigned Siri experience. To access the update manually, locate the Settings app on Apple TV, select System > Software Update.

watchOS 9.1

The latest watchOS update delivers extended battery life for Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (2nd-gen) and Apple Watch Ultra. The extra battery life is aided by reducing the frequency of heart rate and GPS scans during activities and workouts. Others include support for Matter and the ability to download Music via Wi-Fi or Cellular when the watch is not plugged into a power source.

To get the update, open the iPhone’s Watch app and scroll down to My Watch tab. Then select General > Software Update and tap Install Now. It is advisable to keep the Watch charging and near the iPhone throughout the process of installing the update.
