Google To Open First-Ever Physical Retail Store

Two decades after Apple opened its first pair of retail stores in the US (May 19, 2001), Google has unveiled plans to open its first-ever physical retail store to offer access to hardware products and services. Opening Summer 2021, the Google Store will be opened to the public at the company’s expansive offices in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

Customers will be able to buy and experience items such as Chromecast, Pixel phones, Nest products, Fitbit devices, Pixelbooks, and Stadia at the Google Store. There will also be a click-and-collect option to order online on GoogeStore.com and pick-up in store similar to what Apple already offer with its stores. Google will also recruit experts to offer various technical supports including help with installations, troubleshooting issues, and fixing cracked screens.

Apple has seen massive success with its store locations in the US and around the globe while rivals such as Microsoft has already announced the closure of most of its stores globally except for four stores – New York City (Fifth Ave), London (Oxford Circus), Sydney (Westfield Sydney), and the Redmond campus, which will now serve as experience centers.

Google has always relied on its own website and other retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy to sell its products. The company’s closest attempt to having physical retail stores are the hardware pop-up ones established in cities such as Chicago and New York for ‘Made By Google’ products.
