Report: Apple’s Next-Gen M2 Processor Now in Production

Apple’s next-gen M2 processor for Macs (and most recently iPads) has reportedly proceeded to the next stage of production. The report is relying on the fact that it would take TSMC about three months to manufacture the chip, hence, it should be ready around July. Considering the M1 processor is built using the 5nm manufacturing process and features 8-Core CPU, 8-Core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and more, the M2 processor is expected to be built using the advanced 5nm process (5nm Plus or N5P) and will feature about more CPU cores, according to @LeaksApplePro.

The leakster tips the next-gen M2 processor to feature up to 12 CPU cores (8x performance and 4x high efficiency) and will arrive with the redesigned MacBook Pro 16-inch. There are chances that Apple would also extend the upgrade to the GPU cores, Neural Engine and other components which make up the SoC. There is no official confirmation to any of these rumors as at press time.

The M1 processor and release of the macOS Big Sur software kickstarted Apple’s two-year plan to transition the Mac from Intel processors to in-house designed Apple Silicon. The processor has gone on to has received critical acclaim from its blazing performance and power efficiency, whilst also making significant impressions on benchmark platforms. It has been used to power a number of Mac products and more recently, the new iMac and iPad Pro.

PS: Several sources believe the Apple M1 successor would be the M1X, not the M2 as we believe.
