#FarOut: Apple’s iPhone 14 Event Recap

The dust has settled on Apple’s iPhone 14 event, where it formally announced new AirPods, Apple Watch and iPhone products. Apple CEO, Tim Cook kicked off and closed out the livestream as expected and there were presentations by various Apple employees. The ‘Far Out’ event also marked the return of the media personnel for an Apple event since the Pandemic.

To recap what was announced. The AirPods Pro 2 (or AirPods Pro 2nd-Gen) brings the long overdue update to the AirPods Pro (2019) and the premium and rugged Apple Watch Ultra joins the Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch SE (2nd-Gen). The roster is completed by the four new iPhone models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

New Apple Watch Models

Apple Watch Series 8 comes with a new Temperature sensor which focuses on women’s health. It also has a new Low Power mode option which provides up to 36 hours of usage by providing basic access. The Apple Watch SE (2nd-Gen) deliver most of the key features of the Series 8, has a redesigned back case and comes in three new finishes. There are different standard and premium watch bands from Apple, Hermes and Nike to choose from.

Apple Watch Series 8, Watch SE (2nd-Gen) and Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra is the most premium Apple Watch yet. It is designed for outdoor usage and extreme condition as it can be used for activities ranging from scuba diving to triathlons. It has a large 49mm display and a new customisable Action Button to access different features. There are dedicated watch bands and Low Power mode extends the battery life up to 60 hours of usage.

Appl Watch Series 8, Watch SE (2nd-Gen) and Watch Ultra all run watchOS 9 and deliver features such as crash detection, Blood Oxygen, heart rate monitoring and international roaming.

AirPods Pro 2

The AirPods Pro 2/AirPods Pro 2nd-Gen noise cancelling earbuds comes with a faster processor (H2 chip), additional ear tip size, Personalised Spatial audio, new touch control and new Adaptive Transparency mode. Battery life has gone up to 30 hours of listening time with ANC on and charging case. Users can now charge the Charging Case via the Apple Watch charger.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Series

As mentioned, there are four new iPhones: two basic models – the iPhone 14 (6.1-inch) & iPhone 14 Plus (6.7-inch) and two Pro models – the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. They all come pre-loaded with iOS 16 and share features such as Crash Detection, Emergency SOS via Satellite new 12MP TrueDepth camera with AutoFocus, Photonic Engine and ultra-fast 5G connectivity.

The iPhone 14 (and 14 Plus) are backed by the A15 Bionic processor and feature a dual camera system with a new 12MP Main camera with larger sensor and larger pixels. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro (and 14 Pro Max) has the same respective display sizes but includes ProMotion technology and a new Dynamic Island feature makes the top-screen area interactive.

The Pro Models are powered by the new A16 Bionic processor which is manufactured using the 4nm process and 40% faster than the closest competition. Photography is handled by a new Pro camera system spearheaded by a new 48MP Main camera with quad-pixel sensor.
