Apple Unveils Vision Pro – Its First Spatial Computer

Apple’s ‘One More Thing’ reveal at the just concluded WWDC 2023 was the Apple Vision Pro. The long-awaited AR/VR headset is being promoted as a ‘Spatial Computer’ – a blend of the digital and physical world. It has so far only been announced for the U.S. market with more countries expected to be announced later in the year. It is priced at US$ 3,499 and will be available by early 2024 on Apple website and stores.

Pre-loaded with visionOS and Apple Silicon (Apple M2 and R1 dual-chip design) ticking under the hood, Apple Vision Pro has a fully 3D user interface which are controlled by the user’s eyes, hands, and voice. Its dual micro-OLED display has UHD resolution in both eye (combined 23 million pixels), making it a viable tool for use at home or work or entertainment generally. A simple toggle of the Digital Crown switches the mode from present to immersive and vice versa.

The device features the company’s first 3D camera, Spatial audio system, Optic ID (secure authentication system) and a new App store to access compatible iPhone and iPad apps. The front laminated glass covers the wide array of cameras and sensors; and sits well on the aluminium alloy frame. The Head Band, Straps, and Light Seal are available in different ranges and sizes.

Users can connect the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad to bring the power of Mac to the headset. They can also enjoy movies and TV shows in 3D combined with advanced Spatial Audio system, and record 180-degree high-res videos with Spatial Audio. Gamers can play over 100 Arcade Games on the headset, which supports modern game controllers.

On FaceTime, users can pick calls as a Persona generated by on-device Machine Learning as well as watch movies, collaborate on projects and browse photos. Users who require vision correction require the ZEISS Optical Inserts to ensure accurate eye tracking. The headset can be used all-day when plugged in and up to two hours of usage on its battery.
