Apple is working with payment platforms and app developers to integrate ‘Tap To Pay On iPhone’ into iOS apps and offer it as a payment option. Stripe, which offers payment processing APIs for web developers, will be the first platform to offer the new feature starting with the Shopify Point of Sale app this spring. More platforms and apps are expected to arrive later this year.

Businesses will be able to unlock the payment feature through a supporting iOS app on iPhone XS or later models. In return, customers get to pay securely by holding their Apple Pay, contactless card, or digital wallet against the business’ iPhone ‘. The feature uses NFC technology and will be available to use at Apple stores in the US before the end of 2022.

Commenting on the announcement, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey said;

“As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards, Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone”.

Apple reiterates that the payment feature is entirely secure and customer data is not only protected, but also encrypted to ensure that no one can see the transaction history.
