Bloomberg reports that Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, Johny Srouji mentioned the company impending transition to Apple-designed cellular modems at a recent town hall meeting with employees. Following the 2019 acquisition of Intel’s modem business, Apple assembled a team of engineers, who has since designed the Apple Watch’s W-series wireless chips and the iPhone’s U1 ultrawide-band chip.

The team will oversee the design of the modems and this move could see Apple’s dependence on Qualcomm components reduce or stop entirely. A recent teardown revealed that 5G connectivity on the iPhone 12 line-up is provided by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem and there are chances that the Snapdragon X60, X65 and X70 modems will be used in future iPhone models. There is no official timeframe as to when the cellular modems will ship in final products.
