Apple is expected to unveil the next major updates to its operating systems – iOS (iOS 15), iPadOS (iPadOS 15), macOS (macOS 12), watchOS (watchOS 8), and tvOS (tvOS 15) at the WWDC 2021. It could also spring in a surprise hardware announcement such as the HomePod smart speaker in 2017 and last year’s decision to transition the Mac line-up from Intel to Apple silicon processors. There are rumours suggesting that new Macs with Apple Silicon could make an appearance.

The tagline for this year’s event is ‘Glow and Behold’ and asides the memoji on the invite which could suggest the potential announcement of the Apple Glasses/VR headsets or new AR capability, there is little to take away from the invite. In addition to keynote announcements and State of the Union addresses, there would also be online session, 1:1 lab sessions and new ways for developers and Apple designers as well as engineers to communicate about latest developments.

Apple also used the medium to announce the commencement of submissions for this year’s Swift Student Challenge for young developers to show off their coding skills by creating a Swift playground. Finally, as part of its US$100 million pledge to Racial Equity and Justice Initiative, the company is donating $1 million to San Jose-based SJ Aspires to offer scholarship and mentorship opportunities as well as online tools for students of colour.
