AirPods Max Smart Case Not as Important As Initially Thought

Apple has fully revealed the finer details about the AirPods Max smart case. The accessory was highlighted during the launch as a companion battery management tool to keep the high-end over-ear wireless headphones in ultralow power mode to preserve battery charge. However, that appears to be misleading as the Max can go into low power and ultralow power modes sans case.

According to updated Apple support documents, the AirPods Max functions in three power modes: in-use, low power, and ultralow power modes. Without the case, the headphones go into low power mode once it is inactive/stationary for more than five minutes and eventually transition into the ultralow power mode after 72 hours (3 days) of inactive usage. In this stage, the Bluetooth and ‘Find MY’ feature has been disabled to extend battery life further.

In contrast, the low power mode is instantly activated when the headphones are placed in the Max smart case and progresses to ultralow power mode after 18 hours. At this mode, the Bluetooth and ‘Find My’ feature are also disabled to ensure the battery lasts longer. It is still unclear as to how long the smart case contributes to the battery life.

PS: Apple used the word stationary, which could mean motionless (when not in motion) and inactive (when not active).
