6th-Gen iPad mini: A15 Bionic Chip, USB-C port, 5G Connectivity

At the California streaming event, Apple unveiled two new iPads: the 9th-Gen iPad with A13 Bionic and 6th-Gen iPad Mini with the latest A15 Bionic chip (6-core CPU and 5-Core GPU), which also powered the new iPhone 13 Pro series. Compared to the previous generation, CPU performance is up to 40% better, GPU performance has skyrocketed to 80% and machine learning is 2x faster.

The 6th-Gen iPad Mini has a larger 8.3-inch Liquid Retina Display with True tone, 500nits brightness, P3 wide color gamut, and anti-reflective screen coating. It uses a USB-C port instead of a lightning port and now supports the Apple Pencil (2nd-gen), which magnetically attaches to the side for pairing and wireless charging. Apple has also placed the Touch-ID at the top of the frame.

Photography is handled by an upgraded 12MP ultra-wide front camera with support for Center Stage and a 12MP (f/1.8) rear camera with focus pixels and True tone flash. The rest of the specs include stereo in landscape mode, Wi-Fi 6, 5G connectivity, and as expected various features from iPadOS 15 including live text and new widgets layout (from September 20 to compatible devices).

Pricing starts at US$ 499 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model and US$ 649 for the 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. It is available in Pink, Space Gray and Starlight Purple. The 6th-Gen iPad mini is open for pre-orders today and will arrive by September 24. Apple is selling colourful Smart Folios in Black, Dark Cherry, Electric Orange, and English Lavender colours for US$ 59.
